Policy & Advocacy Manager

Job Specification

Salary: £31,411.92 pa + 25 days annual leave + public holidays

We’re restless. We’re determined. We’re ruthlessly focused on having the greatest possible impact to improve the lives of students at our universities.

Our members are some of the most ambitious and capable students at any university and their expectations are high. We’re independent from the university and it’s our role to influence, shape and change the institution in the vision of our members.

With over 20,000 students at UAL and 10,000 students at LSE, dwarfed by an organisation fatter and wealthier than us – we need to nurture relationships at all levels within the university systematically placing the views of students into committees, discussion papers and in front of decision makers.

We’re unique in that our two students’ unions work together. There are distinct services, strategies and campaigns across two very different student bodies, but we’ve set ourselves up to share expertise and staff across two independent organisations. We provide social space and activities, a range of services and representation for our members. We are committed to providing excellent opportunities for our staff to learn and develop within their roles and offer an excellent environment in which you can grow in experience and skills.

This role is all about positioning the organisation to ensure it externally communicates the views of students at every level of the institution’s hierarchy, and you’ll be the person who will change our universities for the better, for ever.

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who is passionate about policy, influencing and lobbying. They will be motivated by change, systematically working through evidence to understand what people think, and coming up with strategies to do something about it.

Working with staff at all levels within two universities, at all levels within two unions, leading a team of three and supporting elected officers to present evidenced-based, relevant, consistent policy positions will be fun, stretching and a life changing opportunity.

Your written English will be of particularly high standard, and you will have the ability to write high quality content, quickly, for different audiences. You can present complex topics to a diverse audience, digesting and prioritising a tsunami of information to position the organisation as relevant, legitimate and authoritative.

You will be leading and managing your own team of three who need to understand what our members think and why. Your team run all of the processes and development associated with course representation, and you will support elected officers to have the highest political impact within the university.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to build on their experience in an environment which rewards creativity, impact and fun.

Application forms and an information pack for each post are available by contacting jobs@su.arts.ac.uk or by visiting www.lsesu.com/about/workforus.

Applications will only be considered on an official application form.

If you wish to informally discuss the role, please get in touch with Dave Lewis, Head of Engagement & Advocacy (d.lewis@su.arts.ac.uk or d.c.lewis@lse.ac.uk), to arrange a chat.
