Beyond the Classroom SU Talks: What is the Role of a Public Broadcaster?

This event will explore the questions of public funding and what role a public broadcaster should fulfill, as well as providing students with a brief overview of the variety of careers available within the broadcasting sector.

Led by Education Officer Jon-Rhys Foster, SU Talks is a series of lectures that aim to explore 'alternative' career paths. Experts from different industries will explore topical issues within different sectors through panel discussion and debate. 

 

This talk will ask: what is the ideal role of a public broadcaster in the modern media landscape? With the license fee up for debate and the government reveiwing the BBC's Royal Charter, questions about value, funding and responsibility have never been more topical. Join a panel of illustrious speakers to examine the state of the BBC and discuss its possible future. 

 

Guest speakers include:

- Charlie Beckett: Professor in the LSE Media and Communications Department, founding director of POLIS and regular commentator on journalism and politics for the UK and international media. 

 

- Suzanna Taverne: BBC Trustee since 2012, Suzanna is currently Chairman of the BBC Services Committee and a member of the BBC value for money committee. She is a former Managing Director of the British Museum and Director of Operations at Imperial College. 

 

- Katy Takatsuki: Broadcast journalist and producer for BBC radio, working on numerous high-profile programmes including 'Any Questions' and 'World at One'. For the last two years Katy has been senior producer for BBC Radio Four's 'The Media Show'.
