The International Summer Academy of the Politeïa Network

At the start of the Summer break, 25th- 29th June, The Grimshaw International Relations Club of the London School of Economics are hosting the International Summer Academy (ISA) of the international Politeïa Network. The ISA is the main annual event for the Politeia Network, an informal community of students and young people across the world who have an interest in International Relations and International Affairs and of which the LSE's Grimshaw Club is a founding member. The network aims to provide platforms for intercultural dialogue between member organisations. Other member organisations of the network include:

        Studentenforum im Tönissteiner Kreis (Germany).

·       Conferencia Mariano Otero (Mexico),

·       Foraus (Switzerland)

·       Centre d'Education Politique Independant de tout parti Conference Olivaint (France)

Each year, one member organisation takes a turn in hosting the ISA, inviting small delegations from the other member organisations to join them. The format and topic of the ISA changes each year  but the central concept is that it is a conference organised by members for the academic benefit of one another, typically taking place over 5-7 days. ISAs are normally attended by approximately 30 students.

Grimshaw’s ISA topic will be: ‘The Survival of a Union: What does the future look like for the EU?’. This topic has been chosen on the basis that the EU is one of the most important experiments in regional integration in International Relations. The challenges it is facing now and the task to find solutions to them are not only important for the 500 million people residing within its borders, but also have important implications for, and are being watched by, the rest of the world; especially those areas of the globe experimenting in their own regional integration projects such as South East Asia and Latin America.

The ISA will take place over five days, four days at LSE hearing presentations, participating in debates and interactive workshops, and networking, and one day will consist of visits around London.

The days at LSE will be spent in a conference format. Each day of the conference will focus on a specific subject area of the EU and The Grimshaw Club are inviting expert speakers, from academics to activists and from civil servants to commentators, to address the participants. All conference activities are aimed at providing the participants with a profound, academic and meaningful understanding of the topic which they can then apply in their future studies and careers. Additionally a balanced mix of presentations, panel discussions and workshops will ensure that participants can train their respective speaking and presentation skills on a systematic basis. Following the conference, we will seek to publish a paper summarizing the conclusions of the event to be distributed among policy makers.

The daily topics will be:

Saturday 25th

Finance and Economy

Sunday 26th

AM: The Refugee Crisis

PM: Environment and Energy

Monday 27th

Political Movements and Ideology in the EU

Tuesday 28th

The LSE prides itself on being a diverse student body, partly because it recognises the benefits to be gained from studying a subject matter from a range of different perspectives and values and because it recognises that international cooperation continues to increase in importance in the 21st century. The Grimshaw Club, as the LSE’s International Relations Society, are incredibly excited to be working along with our partner organisations within the Politeïa Network on this academic project to make it truly a student led and international project. The very inspiration for hosting the ISA 2016 came from the connections and legacy established at the extremely successful Studentenforum ISA 2015 in Berlin, where we were able to truly value what such as project can give to long term partnerships if momentum is maintained. Who knows what these connections between students today may bring in the future?
