Wanda's Student Life in London

Wanda's Student Life in London

I am directionally challenged.

The fact that I have no concept of NSEW (only know that I live on the South Bank because I’ve been told so) is as much a part of me as my brown hair and my insatiable appetite for olives. And so when I made the move from Toronto to London to start my master’s at LSE I was expecting to get lost loads of time.

I wasn’t expecting how much I would enjoy it.

London is a city made to be lost in. The first time I got lost walking home from school (which is incredible in and of itself because all I need to do to get home is walk down Aldwych over Waterloo Bridge) I somehow found myself in Covent Garden (don’t ask how I accomplished this).  In this little detour not only did I realize how close Covent Garden is to LSE, but I stumbled on a magic show happening in the courtyard and wandered through the vendors and goods in shop windows, pleasantly surprised, instead of frustrated, by my lack of navigational skills.

This is a city made for walkers, and park goers, and theatre enthusiasts, and museum lovers (there are over 300!), and foodies, and drinkers (tea or a pint), and nightlife socialisers, and market meanders (I find Borough endlessly delightful) and the list goes on and on. I’m just discovering London, and am still in the honeymoon stage of constant infatuation with how much this city has to offer. And so as I embark on my journey to figure this city out, one lost expedition at a time, I invite you to come with me, and share in the forum your favourite places to eat, shop, party, visit. We may be students at LSE bogged down learning about stuff and getting smart enough to sport the “More Intelligent than You since 1895!” tote bag, but we’re also living in London. Let’s explore this city and trade secrets (that the Internet will make a little less secret) to maximize our time here. Whether you’re an international (like me) or a Londoner through and through, highlight your London favourite finds and I’ll do the same.

Fun facts about Wanda: Wanda, a hockey-loving/ ice-skating Canadian, is the Digital Communications Ninja with LSESU. She’s also doing her Msc in Media, Communication and Development. She’s been charged by an elephant (on two separate occasions) and she only loves olives because she wanted to like dirty martinis. So maybe there is hope for her sense of direction after all.
