Academic Life

You have found yourself studying at one of the most prestigious universities in the world, and you have also paid for it, both through taxes and fees. You have the right to demand the very highest quality of academiclifeeducation from the LSE.

In recent years, the Students' Union has won some important victories on issues such as class sizes, teaching on Friday afternoons and the standard of class teaching.

This year we will also be campaigning on the following issues:

  • Re-sits in September or December for masters students
  • Standardising the use and treatment of Graduate Teaching Assistants across departments
  • Formalising the Programme Representatives Structure
  • Improving the suspension of courses - trying to prevent last minute cancellations due to unexpected staff sabbaticals
  • More language class subsidies.

However, many students do still have problems with their courses, class teacher, tutor, exams, or the School. It is absolutely crucial that you let the Education and Welfare Officer know of any problems so that we can make sure the LSE keeps improving. The Students' Union has representation at all levels of the LSE, but we can only bring about change if we know what the problems are. You can contact Alexandra Vincenti on su.edwelfare@lse.ac.uk, telephone her on 0207 955 6709 or pop up to her office in E299.

An important means by which we can find out your views on classes, lectures and teaching standards is through LSE's online survey of students' opinions of teaching at the LSE. You will be asked about this once in Michaelmas Term and once in Lent Term.  Third year students also have the opportunity to fill in the National Student Survey.

The results of the questionnaires are used as evidence in order to improve LSE's provision of education. Please take the time to fill these in, as they are the best opportunity to make your views known to the School.
