The Roles of Other School Committees
Undergraduate, Taught Graduate and Research Students Consultative Forums
These three forums meet one every term and consist of a student representative (either undergraduate/General Course, Taught Graduate or Research student) from every department. The Students' Union Sabbatical Officers are also represented by theStudents' Union Education and Welfare Officer and each forum is chaired by the Dean of undergraduate or graduate studies as appropriate. Representatives of the library and IT Services are also invited to present an update report at each forum.
The forum can also invite academic or administrative staff to speak or answer points at the forum where they feel it is appropriate.

The forum will normally:
Discuss issues that are common to all departments. Could include:
- Class sizes
- Teaching Quality and feedback
- Course Packs
Also issues that affect the undergraduate academic experience as a whole. Could include: - Library
- IT services
- Careers
- Teaching Quality Assurance
- Registration and Induction Processes
Forum representatives are also asked to report to members any other issues raised at their SSLC.
The forums report to the Student Affairs Committee, and can also pass its views to the Teaching Learning and Assessment Committee or any other School body when appropriate.
Student Affairs Committee
- Has three student members, one of whom is an SU sabbatical
- Deal with policy and strategy
- Deal with the student experience at all levels, undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research degree
- Areas covered include admissions and access, student progress, grievance and appeal procedures (but not individual cases), student services, and the School's relationship with the Students' Union
- Meets five times a year - once in the Michaelmas Term and twice in the Lent and Summer Terms
- Meets three times in the Michaelmas and Lent Terms and twice in the Summer Term.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment Committee
- Two student members, one of whom is the Students' Union Education and Welfare Secretary and the other a representative of research degree students
- Deals with policy and strategy: the detail is dealt with by specialist sub-committees
- Areas covered include approval of new programmes, responses to external developments, monitoring the performance of programmes and courses, and quality enhancement
- Meets five times a year - once in the Michaelmas Term and twice in the Lent and Summer Terms
Academic Board
- This is the most important academic decision-making body in the University.
- It oversees decisions on all academic-related matters
- There are two student members, elected in cross campus elections in the Michaelmas Term, plus the SU General Secretary and the Education and Welfare Officer. All academics are allowed to be voting members
Court of Governors and Council
5 students are elected to sit on the Court of Governors (plus the SU General Secretary), which deals with all school business. Its powers have been reduced in recent years and it has become mainly a forum for discussion. Decisions are now mainly taken in Council.
One student is elected from the Court of Governors to sit on Council, which is the most important decision-making body in the LSE. The SU General Secretary also sits on Council.
