  • Mature Students

It can be a strange sensation being at university as a mature student. Many mature students have been working or caring for a family and the decision to return to full-time education can result in a sense of isolation. Friends and family can find it hard to adapt to the new priorities to which mature students have committed themselves. Add to these pressures a feeling that you have nothing in common with your fellow students, except for the course you are doing, and many mature students might begin to regret the decision they have taken.

However, it is not all doom and gloom. No-one will pretend that being a student at any time of your life is easy, especially at exam time, but there are so many opportunities for you to get to know other students, to integrate yourself into LSE life, and so much support on offer from the SU that no-one needs to feel isolated. Why not join one of our many societies - you can get involved in anything from debating, drama, finance, live music, Model United Nations or one of many national based societies.

The Entertainments Manager also works hard to ensure that there are a wide range of entertainments on offer that cater to all our students - check out this years new Entertainment's guide for more informtion.

Within the structure of the Students' Union, there is a Mature and Part Time Students Officer on the Executive Committee.

Part-Time Students

For students who are studying part-time, the pressures can be great. They will often be working as well and may have caring responsibilities. If you are only attending School once every week it can be difficult to get to know other students, so it is likely that most of the things mentioned under the mature students heading apply to part-time students as well.

Students with Children

The LSE Nursery provides professional care for children, from six months to five years old. But, there are limited places for the children of students and these are allocated on a first come-first served basis. There are usually waiting lists.

The SU is continuing to campaign for more childcare facilities and less of a financial burden to be placed on students. If you do want to find out more, the Nursery can be contacted on 020 7955 7772.

There is a Students with Children Group that meets regularly. It is a social forum for meeting other students in a similar situation of juggling parenthood with studies. It is a discussion group, and it is a forum for campaigning about facilities at the LSE.
