We invite all LSE students to join LooSE and get involved making television. Sign up to our mailing list at loose.tv@lse... to become a member and to get regular updates on what is going on.
Training: Experience is not at all a prerequisite - we offer training for members at the start of term in Camera Operation and Cinematography, and Video Editing with Final Cut Pro. This term we will also cover Basic Lighting, and Sound on Location. We try to choose times for sessions that will be easy for people to attend, but recognise that not everybody can make it. Therefore, if people e-mail in with requests for training at a certain time, if there are enough to make it worthwhile we can organise other group training sessions.
The easiest way to get involved with filmmaking at LooSE is to Film A UGM. The Union General Meetings, on Thursdays at 1pm in the Old theatre, are the SU's weekly parliamentary-style gatherings where students hold executive members to account and debate motions to take a stance on big issues. We cover them in The Old Theatre using two cameras - one pointed at the stage, and another roving handheld one that covers the audience and sometimes gets an alternate angle on stage action. Filming a UGM offers a chance to get some experience with the cameras. If you're interested, just e-mail us in advance of the particular Thursday you want to do it. You can also get valuable experience on Final Cut Pro by Editing a UGM.
Our big thing has always been creative freedom, so the bulk of programming consists of own-initiative projects by our members. If you have an idea for a project you want to make, you can e-mail it to loose.tv, and we can help you get it off the ground in the following ways:
+ Publicising it among the Network to help you get a crew (either by sending e-mails, or at the meetings of our three departments - Journalism, Fiction and Entertainment)
+ Providing equipment to you and your crew
+ Showing the finished product to a wide audience.
Given the need to manage resources in a balanced way, we can't accept just anything as a 'LooSE project' entitled to the above assistance. It has to be something that, in the view of the LooSE executive committee, would be appropriate and beneficial to put on our website. The kinds of things that we generally turn away are requests to borrow our equipment or people to film an esoteric event or personal showreel so that the requesters can have a personal copy. Sorry, we're not a wedding video service, or an equipment lending shop. But that being said, we are generally very open to all kinds of ideas so please do ask.
If part of how we help project-starters is by getting them a crew, then it follows that one way you can get involved is by working on other people's projects. People ask for help with all kinds of things from filming or interviewing to operating a smoke machine. Just check your e-mail regularly and come to our meetings.
The same applies with the few shows that LooSE itself pioneers. The Old Theatre is currently our only regular fixture, but from time to time we call out to members with One-Off News Reports - special video bulletins that members can create about controversial and important campus news topics. These have included the relevance of the UGM (Voices of the Union), the C&S no-confidence (Confidence Shaken), and at the start of next term we're looking for people to cover the Kanazawa article about life expectancy (see The Old Theatre: Life Expectancy). These reports are pretty simple, involving the filming of interviews with relevant people and with the student body. You can make use of UGM footage, and then compile these together on Final Cut to produce a simple but effective short report.
We're also looking for Presenters to host shows and interview people. If this interests you, let us know and we'll keep you on record.
The Students’ Union invites you to complete our annual survey. The results from this survey are vital to ensure that we provide the best possible service to you and incoming students in the future. All respondents to this survey may choose to be entered into a prize draw to win £150 or one of 5 special goodie bags!! The survey should not take more than 15 minutes to complete. Some questions are optional but please answer as many as possible.
