News Team

The News Team work tirelessly each week to investigate and chase up breaking stories at the LSE, in the higher education sector and internationally. News is definitely one of the more exciting and diverse sections to work for at the Beaver and a fantastic way of getting to know lots of people. News typically consists of LSE, University of London and Higher Education stories and is frequently contacted by the national press. Recent examples have included the story of Erik Ringmar, a Senior Lecturer at the LSE, being threatened by the School. This story was picked up by a number of national papers, including The Guardian.

The News Desk meets every Thursday to research stories, interview people, conduct investigations and trawl through information to find, write and break news stories. The News Desk is a new organisation in the Beaver and as such is looking for applicants.

Applications for the news desk are open now. Send an e-mail to thebeaver.news@lse.ac.uk in order to receive a form. Applicants should expect to work around three regular hours each week, and will gain invaluable experience as being a reporter. We aim to conduct regular training sessions with the National Union of Journalists and train our senior reporters to high, exacting, standards. There is probably no better way at the LSE to get experience in news journalism.

Said and done, we are not necessarily looking for people with mountains of experience. To be a senior reporter you need to be able to learn quickly, have a passion for investigation, good communication skills and a lively mind.

If you'd prefer doing something a little less regular, Beaver News also has a large team of freelance reporters. There is no application process for becoming a freelance reporter - all you have to do is turn up to one of our two weekly news meetings (details below) where you can pick up stories to write about.

Typically, freelance writers are briefed on story writing by the senior reporters on the news desk and the editors - receiving advice and support if you're unsure about anything.
