How to set up a new society

  1. 1. Fill in a “Request to Set up a Society Form” available from SU Reception or the website.  Complete and return the form to SU Reception.

  1. 2. Your request will be referred to the Union Treasurer. As long as your proposed society does not duplicate any existing societies and its aims conform to the objects of the Union and do not contravene Union policy your request should be accepted.  You will be emailed and asked to collect a “Societies Registration Pack” (which will include pre-printed membership lists) from Alice Kington.  If the Treasurer is unsure about your request she may email you to arrange a time for you to speak to her about your proposed society.  Make sure that you are clear about the aims of your society and what activities you would like to organise to achieve these aims.  If still in doubt the Treasurer may refer your request to the Union’s Finance and Services Committee.

  1. 3. Make sure that you read the following documents: Society Regulations, Standard Society Constitution, Election of Society Officers and Duties of Society Officers which are all available online.

  1. 4. Get at least twenty LSE students to sign up to your society on the pre-printed membership lists and to pay at least the minimum membership fee of £1.

  1. 5. The person who completed the “Request to set up a Society Form” should book a room in which to hold elections for the society committee.  To book a room send an email to the School’s Conference Office. Please refer to the document: Booking a Room for Your First Meeting which is available on line, as there is essential information you need to include in the email, without which your booking request will not be processed.

  1. 6. When you have received confirmation of your room booking, you should contact all your members to publicise the election and the societies officer at su.societies@lse.ac.uk.  You should then submit your membership lists and accompanying membership fees to Alice Kington.  This should be done no later than two working days before the date of the election of the society committee. Membership should be closed at this point until after the elections have been held.  Please ensure that you have photocopied your membership list before you submit it.

  1. 7. When you have held the elections the new Chairperson must complete an online registration form – see “Registration Procedure New” on the website or refer to the Societies Handbook.

  1. 8. Once registered you will be able to book rooms via LSE for You and providing you have receipts, claim back any expenditure you have made on behalf of the society from your provisional budget allocation and membership fees.
