As set out in the Union's Codes of Practice, C & S' formal responsibilities are:
1. Advising the Chairperson of the Union General Meeting on the conduct of the Union General Meeting.
2. Ensuring that Union General Meeting Motions and amendments are constitutional and within the Law of the Land.
3. Ensuring the proper conduct of Union elections, and as the final internal appellate body on decisions of the returning officer.
4. Advising the officers of the Union on constitutional matters.
5. Making recommendations regarding proposed amendments to the constitution.
6. Making proposals for amendments to ensure the proper functioning of the Constitution.
7. Ratifying the Constitutions of Union Societies.
8. Adjudging constitutional disputes between members of the Union and committees and officers of the Union.
9. Notifying Officers of the Union and directly elected members of Union Committees if the face a motion of Censure or No Confidence.
