 The Committee's Work

C & S exists to uphold the Constitution and Codes of Practice of the LSE Students' Union and as such may seen be as the Judicial branch of student government at LSE. These documents control how the Union conducts itself; they contain the job descriptions of Executive Officers, details of how Union taskforces and committees are to be run and contain the rules for Union elections. It also has an equal opportunities statement to make sure that no student may be discriminated against in the Union on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation or HIV status to name but a few.

C & S upholds these documents by acting as a court would - any alleged breaches of the constitution may be brought to the attention of the Committee, which will then decide if the constitution has or has not been violated and what actions should be taken as a result. These occurrences are very rare.

On a more regular basis, C & S makes sure that Union policy will fall within the boundaries of the constitution by scrutinising motions which are submitted for the Union's weekly General Meeting. More details about this aspect of the Committee's work can be found on the Motions page.
