How are policies decided?

A meeting of the Union General Meeting where policy is debated before every student can vote online
Any student can submit a policy to the Democracy Committee. The Democracy Committee the decides whether and when the policy should go to the Union General Meeting, and if not what should be done to the policy proposal. (For instance, most policies might be more appropriately dealt with in an assembly).
Note that all policy must appear on a UGM order paper for one week before it is discussed at the next UGM.
When a policy proposal is discussed at a UGM, two speakers may speak in favour or against the policy proposal. There is a process for amending the text of policy proposals, but this must not alter the core meaning of the policy proposal.
After discussion at a UGM, voting occurs online. Voting opens on Thursday afternoon and closes on Friday at 5pm. A simple majority is required for all motions.
