Free Speech

Free Speech

Welcome to Speakeasy, aka the Free Speech society!

Want to promote free speech in the LSESU's most talked about society? Join today to get involved in the fightback against campus censorship.

University should be an environment where students are treated as capable, autonomous and rational adults. This means exposing them to ideas they might not agree with and importantly encouraging them to challenge the views they dislike or find offensive, as opposed to censoring them. Student ideas should be rigorously challenged, not protected.

Freedom of speech allows us to decide for ourselves, through discussion, debate and argument, what is a good idea and what is a bad one. We become masters of our own minds, without others determining on our behalf what we may read, think and believe.

Freedom of expression has always been a necessity for democratic society, opening up debates on ideas that were once deemed extremely offensive and wrong, leading to positive social progression. Now free speech is threatened by societal self-censorship born out of the fear of being offensive.

Speakeasy aims to promote these values on campus by staging campaigns against no-platforming and censorship. We will write, host events, invite speakers, and protest on an issue-by-issue basis against infringements of free speech in the LSE. We hope to spark positive discussion on free expression and wider social controversies, and celebrate freedom of speech.
