Muay Thai, or Thai boxing is often described as the ‘Art of Eight Limbs’ – punches, elbows, kicks and knees are all allowed. Muay Thai is steeped in history and traditions closely linked to Thailand’s own history. An integral part of Muay Thai is conditioning – shadow boxing, running, abdominal and body weight resistance exercises all help to seriously boost your fitness levels as well as your confidence.
The Archa Tong LSE Muay Thai Club is named after an orphanage in the remote hill top region of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand. The abbot who has dedicated his life to the orphaned children was once a professional Thai boxer and the Muay Thai taught in the club comes directly from him.
To give back to the source, every year the club holds a sponsored ‘kickathon’ in order to raise money for the children of the orphanage. The club also regularly participates in inter-uni, amateur and professional competitions across the UK. Students have graduated from starting Muay Thai at the club, having their first novice bout and then on to competing on the professional circuit both in the UK and Thailand.

Muay Thai FAQs
1. What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai is characterised by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins and thus it is sometimes referred to as "the art of eight limbs". A national sport of Thailand which puts emphasis on both physical and mental training.
2. Do I have to have prior experience?
Beginners are as welcome as are more experienced fighters. Each session covers both basic and more advanced techniques.
3. What is the class format like?
20-30 minutes – warm up, conditioning
45-60 minutes – techniques and drills
45-60 minutes – combos and pad work, occasional sparring
4. Do I have to spar?
No. Sparring is only if you want to take part and within your comfort level. We always take caution while sparring and the aim is to increase your skill and confidence in a safe and friendly environment. There are opportunities for competitive interclub fights throughout the year.
5. What do I need to bring/wear to a class?
Shorts and T-shirt are fine to begin with, bring along a water bottle too. Don't worry about hand wraps, gloves, mouth guards, etc. if you haven't got them yet. Gloves will be provided and you can figure out if you need anything else after a couple of sessions. Remember, no need to bring your shoes - we always train barefoot.
