LSE Mini-Model Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Mini-MASEAN) - The South China Sea Issue

At the start of every term we give students the chance to attend free taster sessions.

Give It A Go

Give It A Go is all about exploring LSESU’s amazing, student-led sports clubs, societies and the media group societies. At the start of every term we give students (non-members) the chance to attend free taster sessions with some of our best clubs and societies to see what they’re really like without having to pay membership to join.

These different activities will fall under 5 different themes: Get Active, Learn A Skill, Relax and Socialise, Be Creative, and Share Your Culture, so you will get a flavour of what to expect from the Give It A Go session before you go!

This event aims to bring together students interested in Southeast Asia to discuss a current issue affecting the region through a debate format. Additionally, this event would serve as an introduction to the Society, and as a taster for our flagship event, the LSE Model ASEAN Summit, held every academic year. The issue to be discussed during the event is the maritime & territorial disputes in the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea. Given that issues regarding territorial sovereignty have found recent expression in maritime disputes between several states in ASEAN and in Asia, the debate will seek to present an avenue to discuss and place into focus the impacts that such developments would have on the ASEAN region.

Participants will also get to forge new and meaningful friendships with fellow delegates, and deepen their knowledge on contemporary Southeast Asia.

This will be a beginner-level debate, hence no prior experience in debate is needed. An introductory presentation at the start of the Give-it-a-Go will prep you for the debate. Additionally, short videos screened on various issues to be considered during the debate will be presented before every sub-debate.

The conference will be followed by a debrief and an informal networking session.

This event will be held on Tuesday, 29 September, at the LSE campus, and is completely FREE!"
