Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “Fifth of May”) is an annual celebration held on May 5th. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire, on May 5th, 1862.
In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle can often be celebrated through military parades or battle re-enactments. The city of Puebla marks the event with an arts festival, a festival of local and re-enactments of the battle. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is widely celebrated, as the date has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture.
Cinco de Mayo is not to be mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16th, where the war of Mexican independence from Spain is commemorated.
