LSE Students' Union is a not-for-profit organisation led by LSE students, for LSE students. We're staffed by a team dedicated to helping students to make the most of all the life-changing experiences open to them during their time at university. We are currently recruiting a Head of Student Voice to join our senior leadership team at one of London’s most engaged Students’ Unions.

About the Role

The role has 5 primary functions including (but not limited to):

1. To lead the Advice and Representation teams to enable effective student voice and advocacy across the whole of LSE

2. To provide strategic leadership by driving quality Student Voice, increasing impact, & maximising deployment of resources to improve the experience for students at LSE

3. To support and empower the elected Officers to represent LSE students to make effective positive change

4. Responsible for the department’s operational planning, and involvement in delivering the Union’s strategic aims

5. Deputise for the Chief Executive as required

Key Responsibilities

Leading service delivery

  • Lead the Union’s provision of representation, democracy, welfare, advice, and advocacy
  • Overall responsibility for the legal compliance issues relating to Advice and Representation teams
  • Lead the continual development and maintenance of processes through which the student view on quality of their educational and community experiences are collated
  • To enhance the democratic operation of the Union through coherent governance and a robust elections process including acting as the Deputy Returning Officer for LSESU Elections
  • Develop and lead on the strategic aims and enablers to deliver the greatest impact for members
  • Identify and secure resources needed to deliver the teams’ strategic aims and enablers
  • Ensure the maximum impact and value is delivered by the teams
  • Lead the Advice and Representation teams in identifying and communicating key issues for students throughout the Union
  • Lead the department’s operational planning, and involvement in delivering the Union’s strategic aims by developing and continuously improving service delivery

Quality, impact & resources

  • Ensure performance management of the teams’ strategic aims and enablers
  • Ensure the allocation of the teams’ staffing and resources to improve quality, performance, and impact
  • Set challenging targets to ensure efficient, effective, and impactful use of resources
  • Report on the performance of the department to Chief Executive, and members, trustees and stakeholders
  • Manage and update regulations and procedures relating to the Advice and Representation teams
  • Budget development and management relating to the Advice and Representation teams
  • Manage legal compliance issues, reputational issues and relationship development relating to provision of activities
  • Manage the processes through which all union departments get feedback from students and stakeholders, working closely with the Chief Executive

Management

  • Arrange, chair, and keep a record of management and all staff meetings within the Advice Representation teams – including performance reviews, appraisals, and investigation
  • Manage the teams’ attendance at relevant events and conferences
  • Manage the team members’ learning and development
  • Ensure overall support, advice and guidance for Officers and representational structures within the Union, such that induction, training, support, and development of individuals is tailored to specific needs
  • Ensure that Officers are supported to represent the membership in dealings with School Committees, School staff, and external people and bodies with reports and briefings
  • Support the Chief Executive to review and report on strategy, policy and research to the Trustee Board & funders
  • Sabbatical support: ensure the creation of a supportive and empowering team to provide support to elected Officers to assist them in the formulation and execution of their plans
  • Support Chief Executive as organisational ambassador working with officers and partners for the benefit of LSESU
  • Impactfully engage and operate as part of an effective senior leadership

General duties

  • A condition of employment is that all staff are expected to assist in key events throughout the year, e.g. Welcome festivals and any other key event, including elections
  • To undertake any other tasks that would be deemed suitable within this role as directed by line management
