The role and responsibilities of the position:
The democracy committee oversees the activities of the students’ union from elections to the Union general meeting. We make sure everything is above board, abide the constitution and strive for ways to improve democracy in the union. We meet weekly to discuss the above.
Three qualities someone interested in this position should possess are:
-
Love the SU
-
Know where you stand – don’t be a pushover
-
Know where the bye-laws and constitutions are located on the su website
The best part is:Â
Thinking up creative ideas to improve student participation.
It’s not all fun and games. The most challenging aspect is:
Trying to please every student. Sometimes quick decisions must be made that often are not liked by everyone.
The most surprising part of the job is:Â
How much the DC actually do and how much we can change.
The advice I would give to someone thinking of standing:
Remember that whilst this position is supposedly an overseeing/ ‘neutral’ role, you will never please everyone.
