The role and responsibilities of the position:
As Environment and Ethics Officer my main role this year has been highlighting ethical issues in the school, helping draw up plans for more student involvement in financial and ethical decisions, running student environmental projects such as Green Week, Relove, Food Co-op and the roof garden, as well as campaigning against government cuts and being part of the education movement. This means holding meetings and awareness raising events, working with other Student Union staff as part of the environmental management working group, applying for green impact awards, and ensuring the SU runs in an environmentally friendly way!
Three qualities someone interested in this position should possess are:
-
Good, firm politics – the most important!
-
Good time management
-
Can respond under pressure
The best part is:
This year the best part was organising the Defend the Right to Protest gig – we raised £2,000.
It’s not all fun and games. The most challenging aspect is:
Making sure you prioritise what is important to you – for me this meant keeping my society work and officer work separate because I am still active in other parts of the Union.
The most surprising part of the job is:
How many meetings I’m asked to attend!
The advice I would give to someone thinking of standing:
If you have clear politics then do it.
