The role and responsibilities of the position:
A trustee is essentially responsible for the strategic direction of the Students’ Union. The board, as the Union’s highest governing body, signs off on all major financial decisions of the Union. Trustees also have to make sure that their decisions are consistent with the values that the Union stand for, which are determined by our constitution and through motions passed at UGM’s.
Three qualities someone interested in this position should possess are:
-
Inquisitive
-
Rational
-
Pragmatic
The best part is:
The free tea and coffee!
It’s not all fun and games. The most challenging aspect is:
It is difficult to maintain the ethos and values that LSE students stand for, whilst also acting in the financial interest of the Union.
The most surprising part of the job is:
How sophisticated the structure of the Union is. I was also surprised to discover the ultimate power the trustees have over its budget.
The advice I would give to someone thinking of standing:
You should stand! It’s a role that is not very time consuming and incredibly interesting. It's an alternative way of getting involved, without getting entangled within the Union’s political aspects.
