The role and responsibilities of the position:
To support Women at LSE in campaigning around issues which are important to them. To highlight issues of sexism on campus and tackle sexist views. To head campaigns on campus around women’s issues. To help celebrate the diversity of women on campus and highlight issues women face in and off campus.
Three qualities someone interested in this position should possess are:
Passion about gender equality
Should self-define as a woman
Willingness to take a stand on issues
The best part is:
Meeting loads of interesting, passionate people, educating myself on issues and putting on events which educate other people too!
It’s not all fun and games. The most challenging aspect is:
The amount of work you have put in, and the fact that sometimes you have to react to things on campus at times that aren’t convenient to you. Also the various pressures from different groups which can be put upon you.
The most surprising part of the job is:
How hard it is to get people to come to things, and help you with things – everyone has a lot of work at LSE and it’s important to create a ‘team’ early on to help!
The advice I would give to someone thinking of standing:
It’s a stressful role and takes a lot of work to be done well, so make sure you are really passionate about gender equality and get organised!
