Executive Committee 2008/09
The Executive Committee meet every week during term times. The meetings are open to all students and everyone has speaking rights.
Full-time student representatives (Sabbatical Officers, aka 'Sabbs')
Your Sabbatical Officers are four students who have been elected to run the Union on a day-to-day basis
this year. They get paid £26,000 p.a. to either take a year out of studies or stay on at LSE after they graduate. You can read their reports and hold them to account at the UGM each week. Students even have the power to sack them, through no-confidences and censures.
Communications Officer
Robin Low - su.comms@lse.ac.uk
The Alistair Campbell of the Union a.k.a. the Spinmeister General. A job that requires a combination of creative flair and technical geekiness, the Communications Officer oversees the Media Group, publications (like this very booklet!), the Students’ Union website, advertising, marketing and campaigns.
Education & Welfare Officer
Emmanuel Akpan-Inwang - su.edwelfare@lse.ac.uk
The kind of person you don’t really want to ever have to see, but they are there if you need any help, advice or guidance. The Education and Welfare Officer looks after our high quality Advice and Counselling Centre, and represents students to the School on most educational and welfare matters.
General Secretary
Aled Dilwyn Fisher - su.gensec@lse.ac.uk
Not to be confused with a glorified minutetaker, the General Secretary is the public face of the Students’ Union, sitting on the major strategic committees of the School and representing LSE students externally.
They Chair the Executive and have the ability to make decisions on its behalf in between meetings.
Treasurer
George Wetz - su.treasurer@lse.ac.uk
According to fictional coke baron, Tony Montana, “first you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the women”. Although the women are unlikely to materialise, with overall responsibility for running all the Students’ Union services and allocating budgets to societies and sports, the Treasurer certainly has the power.
Part-time student representatives (Part-time Officers & current students):
These Officers are volunteers who, with the Sabbaticals, are the legally responsible trustees of the Students' Union. The AU President and General Course Representative can’t vote, because they aren’t elected by a cross-campus ballot. The Returning Officer can’t vote either as - in theory - it is an impartial position!
Anti-Racism Officer
Ben Jones - su.anti-racism@lse.ac.uk
Campaigns against discrimination based on race, religion or nationality and supports students who have been the victims of racism.
AU President
Charlie Glyn- su.aupresident@lse.ac.uk
