We would like to thank all students who participated in the recent referendum titled “Should LSESU acknowledge the ongoing genocide in Palestine?”. Your engagement in this democratic process reflects the strength of our student community and its commitment to dialogue, advocacy, and representation.
We recognise that this referendum has engaged deeply held views and prompted passionate advocacy from both sides. We would like to thank all campaigners for their commitment to respectful dialogue and democratic engagement throughout this process.
Outcome
Following the close of voting and the completion of the count, the results are as follows:
The majority of students voted in favour of the motion. The outcome represents a democratically expressed sentiment of the student body, rather than a directive for action, due to the provisions of the 1994 Education Act, which defines the activities of the Students’ Union including the use of its resources. The Students’ Union, bound by this act, will not be using its resources to implement this motion, but below is how we can move forward:
Next Steps
While LSESU recognises the limitations of our ability to take action, the results of this referendum are a key tool in how we move forward as a Union, in lobbying the School on key issues such as Divestment, and how we utilise the opinion of students when moving forward to make decisions.
As a Students’ Union, we would not exist without our students, so understanding the sentiment of students on campus is vital. We want our campus to be a safe space for students to continue educating each other on global issues, and to hold respectful debate. We will always try to facilitate that in a safe and legal manner.
