Introduction

LSE's Runner Up Society of the Year 2020

We are one of the largest and most operationally diverse societies on the LSE campus, and our engagement with global issues means that there is something for everyone at UNSOC, no matter their academic discipline, cultural background or personal beliefs.

We are dedicated to empowering our members with the necessary skills and knowledge about the causes they are passionate about and providing them with a platform to discuss global peace & security, humanitarian, environmental and socio-economic issues.

Whether you're looking to get into Model United Nations (MUN), want to get specialist knowledge about career paths into the UN, or see yourself getting involved in our charity activity throughout the year, the UN Society has got something for you!

What we do - Our three divisions:

Careers:

Careers: The division empowering students to engage with a network of organisations and individuals within the professional world. The division holds events such as career panels, networking events, mentorship schemes and speaker events for students to gain a greater insight into career opportunities in international relations. Engaging with the core values of the UN, our career events involve a variety of organisations and corporations in the field of international development, NGOs, diplomacy and the United Nations itself. With the division continuing to grow even bigger and holding an even more diverse range of events than ever before, we’ve sought to empower students to develop their skills and involve them in a wide range of events to expose students to a greater variety of opportunities both within and outside of LSE. Some of our landmark events include our Career Panels focused on International Economic Organisations, Diplomacy and Non-Governmental organisations, our Careers Mentorship Scheme, and the Foreign Affairs Reception.

Model United Nations: #TeamLSE represents the LSE at Model UN conferences around the world, defending LSE’s title of ‘Best European Delegation’ against other universities and professional teams. Through rigorous weekly training sessions, our members develop high levels of competency in public speaking, lobbying, negotiation, research and policy-writing, and the consistent dedication to excellence displayed by our members is reflected in the 126 delegate awards won by #TeamLSE over the last 18 months. Whether exploring MUN for the first time or continuing from past experiences, #TeamLSE encourages our members to engage with critical international and social issues through participation in a range of conferences, accessible to all our members, developing a tight-knit community of individuals with strong diplomatic skills and academic tenacity.  We also host two annual conferences, LSEMUN and YouthMUN, with Secretariats comprising our own members. Welcoming over two hundred delegates, both domestic and international, our members gain vital planning and logistical experience.

Outreach: The division fostering awareness, fundraising and volunteering for the issues our members care about. In the past year, we successfully kept to our ‘one event per week’ initiative and organised a range of events including: multiple speaker panels, fundraising stalls, our landmark Sustainable Arts and Crafts Fair as well as a ‘Challenge for Charity’ Race. We empower members to discover and engage in volunteering by working closely with the LSE Volunteer Centre, providing opportunities and expertise directly to members. Every year, we select a pressing global issue on which to raise awareness and host an ambitious week-long event. Last year, the topic was ‘Child Rights’ and we hosted a week full of events and activities uncovering child poverty and the violation of children’s rights.

2019-2020 Awards:

Runner up for Society of the Year, Best Creative Initiative (Inaugural Sustainable Arts & Crafts Fair), Best Conference (YouthMUN 2020), Best Trip (Model United Nations Trip Series), Best Collaboration (London Diplomacy Ball)

Gold STARs Winners

Our Model UN Team, #TeamLSE, is also ranked the #1 MUN Team in the UK.
