United Nations

Introduction

LSE's Society of the Year 2019

We are one of the largest and most operationally diverse societies on the LSE campus, and our engagement with global issues means that there is something for everyone at UNSOC, no matter their academic discipline, cultural background or personal beliefs.

We are dedicated to empowering our members with the necessary skills and knowledge about the causes they are passionate about and providing them with a platform to discuss global peace & security, humanitarian, environmental and socio-economic issues.

Whether you're looking to get into Model United Nations (MUN), want to get specialist knowledge about career paths into the UN, or see yourself getting involved in our charity activity throughout the year, the UN Society has got something for you!

What we do - Our three divisions:

Careers-Corporate: The division of the society which empowers students to engage with a network of organisations and individuals within the professional world. The division holds events such as career panels, symposiums and networking events for students to gain insight into the world of international development and the United Nations. Engaging with the core values of the UN, our careers events involve a variety of organisations and firms in the field of international development, arbitration, consultancy and the United Nations itself.

Model United Nations: #TeamLSE is the LSESU United Nations Society’s Model United Nations team. We proudly represent LSE at an international level, and have acquired the title of ‘Best European University Model United Nations team’ for LSE. We also host two annual and large-scale conferences: LSEMUN and LSE YouthMUN. As a team, we develop our members' public-speaking, lobbying, negotiations, research, and policy-writing skills through weekly trainings. Our members are passionate and competent individuals, reflecting a high quality and standard of diplomatic skills, winning a total of 74 awards in the 2018 – 2019 academic year alone. In organising conferences, Secretariats for our two annual conferences are drawn from our members and they gain valuable experience in event-planning and execution as they shepherd hundreds of domestic and international attendees.

Outreach: The grass-roots focused branch of UNSOC which empowers members to raise awareness and fundraise for the causes they care about. Having worked closely with the Raising and Giving Society of the LSE Student Union this year, we have organized several fundraising stalls and awareness-raising activities. As one of our initiatives, we proudly host an annual ambitious week-long event titled 'Awareness Week'. This year's Awareness week will be focused on raising awareness of child rights.

2018-19 Awards:

Society of the Year, Gold Star Award, Most innovative campaign (Awareness Week, Outreach Division), and Best Collaboration (Diplomacy Ball, alongside LSESU Amnesty and Grimshaw)

Our Model UN Team, #TeamLSE, is also ranked the #1 MUN Team in the UK.

Thank you for taking an interest in our society. We are very excited to have you on board!

Yours Sincerely,
The UNSOC family
