About us

Earthrise is the first student-led environmental journal. We launched on 24-12-2018, exactly 50 years after the first photograph of terrestrial Earth was taken by Bill Anders on the Apollo 8 mission. It was one spark lighting up a powerful, continually suppressed but crucial movement of environmentalists.

After 50 years of being stereotyped, silenced, murdered, prosecuted, belittled and diminished, it finally feels as if environmentalists are being listened to. But not enough - we have a lot of healing and growing to do. Our generation will pave the way to the future. Climate apathy and denialism don’t belong there, nor greed, nor short-sightedness. 50 years on from Earthrise, we hope to be part of the discussion that will drive us towards a better future.

As a society we organise free and accessible activities for our members including film nights, walks, talks, and more exploring the environment. We encourage members to take these experiences as inspiration for contributions to the journal's four annual issues - Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer. We accept all forms of expression from poems to photography, playlists, and more. Just if it complies with our editorial guidelines. It doesn't matter if you have never written before or had buckets of experience, we want your contributions and thoughts. Earthrise is primarily a place of environmental exploration and expression. You don't need to be an expert to join!

Membership

We are committed to making our activities free and accessible to all, as such our membership price is £0.00! However, please do still 'buy' (register) for our membership so that you can be on our mailing list and be up-to-date on all our events.
