About us

The Gulf Society aims to connect those from and interested in the GCC member states – Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain – as well as facilitate a dialogue on all Gulf-related matters. Our mission statement is as follows:

1. Community

Build a community comprising of those from and interested in the Gulf within the LSE and form intercollegiate relations with other Gulf-affiliated societies.

We aim to foster such a community by having regular socials, including Machboos Monday and Cards and Kairam Night. Additionally, all Gulf Soc members have access to the events of other Gulf-affiliated societies within the University of London member schools.

2. Culture Sharing

Introduce the LSE community to Gulf history, culture, and traditions to build ties and promote collaboration with other LSESU national societies through culture sharing.

This includes trips to the British Library and the National Archives to get an exclusive look at archival primary source documents on the Islamic world, Arabic cultural heritage, and the modern history of the Gulf.

3. Academic Innovation

Provide a platform for scholars specializing in Gulf Studies to showcase their work through workshops and lectures to reorient and update Gulf discourse away from Eurocentric theorizing.

The Society runs workshops throughout the term focusing on contemporary topics in the Gulf where society members can meet and interact with the LSE faculty that specialize in Gulf Studies and participate in nuanced discussion and debate. Additionally, the society also runs and hosts the Gulf Research by the Gulf Lecture Series where Ph.D. students from the Gulf are given a platform to share their research and insights with the Gulf Studies community.

Membership

Purchasing a membership to our society will give you access to all of our events and activities. Additionally, it guarantees you access to the events of other Gulf-affiliated societies within the University of London member schools. Your membership fee goes towards the running of the club, including the cost of events and activities.

As a member, you'll get the opportunity to actively represent your country within the university and meet like-minded and dedicated individuals that will make your experience at the LSE much more fruitful.
