About us

Set up in 2017, the LSESU Machine Learning Society aims to increase the LSE community’s understanding of machine learning, its potential applications and equip members with relevant competencies. Since then, we have expanded to consider not only machine learning, but wider Data Science skills. (and rebranded to LSESU Data Science Society)

What is Data Science?

Data Science is about using statistical and computational techniques to derive meaning from data. It is particularly relevant, given the current age of "Big Data" and has a wide range of applications towards different fields, not limited to Economics, Finance and the social sciences.

Our Mission:

  • Introduce the scope and potential of data science and its applications to students of all backgrounds.
  • Equip members with foundational skills and provide opportunities to apply data science skills to solve problems in a range of contexts, including but not limited to the Social Sciences
  • Engage and build ties with the wider LSE community, including societies and academic departments.

We aim to build a sustainable, inclusive and supportive community experience through:

  • Impactful industry speaker and community events
  • Opportunities to lead or collaborate on meaningful projects with technical rigour
  • Engaging workshops on data analytics, machine learning and programming
  • Platform for members to network, share resources and help one another

Being a member will make you part of the community that we want to build for the LSESU Data Science Society - a space for individuals from different backgrounds to meet and learn more about how data science can be utilised towards their interest.

Being a member entitles you to:

  • Exclusive / Priority access to selected ticketed events
  • Exclusive access to Zulip community and social outings
  • Exclusive access to any sponsorship opportunities
  • Exclusive access to a weekly careers newsletter
  • Early access to materials online
  • one-off perks like limited subsidised conference tickets/hackathon fees

You need to be a member in order to:

  • Participate in projects
  • Join the subcommittee (and stand in for election for the committed)

Events and Activities

We plan to host a wide range of events including:

  • Speaker Events - Invite speakers from different fields to speak about how data science is used in industry
  • Educational Workshops - Instruct on data science and how it can be applied to different fields (Economics, Finance, Social Sciences)
  • A Flagship Event which will take place possibly November/December
  • Socials
