About us

The LSESU Marxist Society aims to promote and discuss socialist theory, as well as providing a way for students to participate in workers’ struggles at the university and in the movement more generally.

We seek to unite students with overworked and underpaid staff, as well as outsourced and precarious workers on campus, in order to build greater solidarity and fight for better living and working conditions. We also engage consistently with left-wing movements and demonstrations in London, in order to help bring students into political struggles and the fight for socialism.

The LSESU Marxist Society is affiliated to the nation-wide Marxist Student Federation, with 50 Marxist societies across the UK, including KCL, UCL, Goldsmiths, SOAS and Brunel in London. By linking up with our sister societies, we consistently attend demonstrations, protests and picket-lines with revolutionary students from the area.

On campus, we regularly organise introductory reading groups on key Marxist texts, as well as public talks and discussions on a wide range of historical, political, economic and theoretical topics, usually featuring external speakers. All our talks and reading groups are open to everyone and do not presume any prior knowledge of the topic.

As a society, we see that political activity should be informed by theory, but theory alone is insufficient to make the change we need in the world. As a result, we encourage members to get involved with the wide variety of activities, campaigns and discussions we put on, since the lessons of each are useful for anyone.

Whether you’re a hardened revolutionary, a curious socialist or if you want to find out more about the ideas of Marxism, all are welcome to sign up or attend any of our events! If you want to fight for socialism within our lifetime, why not join us and help build radical ideas on campus, in London and internationally!

Membership

As a society committed to fighting for a world that is not driven by profit, you do not need to be a member of the society to attend any of our meetings, reading groups or interventions in the workers' movement. As capitalism still currently exists, however, we do need to pay for printing costs, transport for our external speakers and social events we organise. We therefore greatly appreciate it if you buy society membership (which is set at the lowest possible cost). Other than supporting the society's functioning, members also get to vote and stand in committee elections at the end of each year.

Events and Activities

We organise a wide range of events across the year including:

  • Weekly reading groups on key Marxist texts.
  • A weekly talk and discussion on a historical, economic or theoretical subject.
  • Regular group attendance of left-wing demonstrations, protests or picket-lines in London.
  • Attendance of the annual Revolution Festival, coming up this November 10th-12th in London! More information: https://www.revolutionfestival.co.uk/
  • Regular social events with a revolutionary theme
  • Other events, such as the annual debate with the Hayek Society.
