An announcement from LSESU on Fight Night

LSESU can confirm that Fight Night will not go ahead. Following a review of our major sporting events and the associated risks, the Senior Leadership Team has decided to discontinue the event.

LSESU can confirm that Fight Night will not go ahead. Following a review of our major sporting events and the associated risks, the Senior Leadership Team has decided to discontinue the event.

England Boxing, the sport's National Governing Body, protects people stepping into the ring with a strict regulatory framework for recognised boxing competitions. This framework includes requirements around participant eligibility and licensing, coaching qualifications, medical oversight, competition record-keeping, and event governance.

Fight Night has always sat outside this recognised framework. Having reviewed the risks this creates for our members, we have concluded they are no longer acceptable.

Most coaches involved in the research for England Boxing’s 2025 report, suggested that at least 18 months to two years of training should be required before a boxer can compete. Fight Night participants have historically entered the ring with just 6-8 weeks of training behind them.

We want to be clear that this decision is not a reflection on the club, its members, the coach, or how previous events have been run. Fight Night has been successfully run and well received over recent years, and those involved in planning and delivering the event are outstanding at what they do.

The Future of Boxing at LSE

The Boxing Club is a valued part of sport at LSESU.  We’re committed to supporting its development and look forward to exploring ways in which its members can compete in the future.

LSESU will continue working to deliver outstanding sporting and social opportunities for all LSE students.

We understand that news of Fight Night’s discontinuation will be disappointing for some students. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to Fight Night over the years and look forward to working with the Boxing Club on the next chapter of boxing at LSESU.
