Thank you to everyone who took the time to read, engage with and ask questions about LSESU's proposed new Articles of Association during the consultation period.

The consultation gave students an opportunity to ask questions, seek clarification and suggest amendments before the Articles move to the next stage of the approval process. We committed to considering what we heard and sharing our response, so that students can understand not only the proposed Articles, but how they fit into the wider changes taking place across LSESU.

A key question raised through the consultation was how the Articles fit with the wider Transformation Project, particularly while our work on governance, engagement and democracy is continuing.

We think this is an important question, so we want to take the opportunity to explain the journey so far and what comes next.

Why are we changing the Articles now?

The Transformation Project began because students told us there were areas where LSESU could work better. These included the need for stronger governance and clearer decision-making, pressures on our democratic structures, and a desire for clearer communication and increased student engagement.

One of the first steps has therefore been to look at the foundations on which LSESU operates.

The Articles of Association are a key part of those foundations. They provide the overarching legal and governance framework for the Union, covering areas such as our purpose, membership, governance and decision-making.

Updating the Articles does not change LSESU's charitable mission or purpose. The aim is to provide a clearer, more accessible and up-to-date foundation for the next stages of our transformation work.

Why not wait until all the other reviews are finished?

The different parts of the Transformation Project are connected, but they are looking at different things.

The Articles provide the overall framework for how LSESU is governed. More detailed arrangements about how our democratic structures and processes operate can sit within our Byelaws. One of the changes proposed through the new Articles is moving more of this detailed process out of the Articles and into the Byelaws.

This is important because our work on engagement and democracy is still developing.

The Engagement & Democracy Review is looking more closely at how students engage with LSESU, how our democratic structures work and how we can better understand and respond to the breadth of students' experiences and priorities.

So, rather than trying to decide all of that detail through the Articles, the proposed Articles provide the foundation from which that next stage of work can develop.

What does this mean for student representation and democracy?

Questions were also raised about what future changes could mean for student representation, democratic participation and students' ability to hold LSESU to account.

These are important considerations, and they go beyond the Articles themselves.

Updating the Articles is not the end of the conversation about how democracy at LSESU should work.

The next stage of the Transformation Project will look more closely at engagement and democracy, followed by the detailed rules and processes contained within our Byelaws.

We will introduce students to the emerging direction of this work at the Town Hall following the Articles item on 1 December, with further work and engagement taking place as the proposals develop.

This means there will be further opportunities for students to understand the proposals, ask questions and engage with the changes before final decisions are made.

Might the Articles need to change again?

The purpose of the new Articles is to create a framework that is clearer and better able to support LSESU into the future.

Moving more detailed processes into the Byelaws is part of this approach. It means that changes to the detail of how a particular democratic or operational process works should not necessarily require LSESU's overarching governing document to be rewritten.

As with any governing document, the Articles may need to be reviewed again in the future if legal, regulatory or significant governance changes require it. But the intention of this review is to establish a more sustainable foundation for the work that follows.

How have students shaped this work?

The Transformation Project responds to issues students have raised about LSESU, including governance, democracy, communication and engagement.

The Articles consultation is one part of that journey. It has provided an opportunity for students to scrutinise the proposed governing framework, ask questions and suggest amendments before it moves to formal approval.

But student involvement doesn't stop with the Articles.

There will be further opportunities for students to engage as the next stages of the Transformation Project develop, particularly around engagement, democracy and the Byelaws.

What happens now?

The consultation period has now closed and the questions and feedback raised have been considered as part of preparing the Articles for the next stage.

The proposed Articles will now progress through the remaining governance and approval process. Students will have the opportunity to consider the final proposal at the Additional Student Members' Meeting on 1 December 2026.

But the journey doesn't stop there.

The meeting will also provide an opportunity to introduce the next stage of LSESU's transformation, including the emerging work on engagement and democracy. Further work on the detailed democratic arrangements and Byelaws will then continue, with further opportunities for students to understand, question and engage with what is being proposed before decisions are made.

Our aim throughout this process is to be open about what we're changing, why we're changing it, and where students can help shape what comes next.
