Council is LSE’s governing body which means it is legally responsible for the legal, regulatory and strategic oversight of LSE. This includes activity ranging from signing off the School’s audited accounts to approving its strategy and holding Senior Management to account. Council consists of external members and LSE members, including LSESU’s General Secretary and one student. Having student representation on Council is vital in ensuring students are centered in the School’s highest decision making body.
Previously the student member of Council was an elected role, however this year they will be appointed by a panel consisting of Union sabbatical officers and a member of LSE Council. We believe this method of recruitment will allow candidates to better demonstrate their suitability for the role. We’re particularly keen to hear from PhD and research students as we know this group is currently underrepresented in LSESU activity and at Council.
In this instance the term of the role will be from mid-October 2023 until the end of June 2024, and you must plan to be an LSE student for the duration of this period. You would be required to attend (and read the papers for) 3-4 Council meetings during the year, as well as occasional away days and social events.
This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in governance, strategy and higher education. As well as being a valuable student voice on Council, you would also be a Trustee, Company Director and Governor of LSE.
