Sporting student wins: Loretta Sargeant, Kirill Sakahrov, Anisa Khan and more...

Welcome
Photo compilation of student sports stars

LSE is home to an amazing student body, and as your Students' Union, we are super proud to have a student body filled with talented, ambitious and hard working individuals. You may think we're being biased here - but we're really not. Our students achieve countless wins every term, every year and within every cohort, so much so that we don't even hear about every single one! Not only are our students achieving greatly at LSE, but they are also creating change and making history in society and the wider world too.

Every year, our LSESU Sports Clubs see incredible success, both here at LSE and also in BUCS, LUSL and other national competitive fixtures. It really is true when we say that our students really do go above and beyond here at LSE. Not only to they channel so much energy into their studies, but they're also channeling hard work and dedication into their craft as sports players...and it really pays off!

Getting involved in extra-curricular activities such as our LSESU Sports Clubs, is a fantastic way to ensure that you walk away from LSE with much more than just your degree certificate. And if you still don't believe us, we've got some walking and talking examples for you. Here is a spotlight on some of our many LSE sporting heros, their wins, their achievements and how their involvement in sports clubs has impacted their experience:

Loretta Sargeant

LSESU Netball Club

‘After attending trials in my freshers week I made it into the LSE Netball 3rd team, and I’ve absolutely loved playing for them ever since. Certain highlights of my time as a member of LSE Netball would have to include going on tour as a whole club (with all 8 teams) to Manchester and Liverpool, getting player of the match on multiple occasions and winning our league last year. For my final year, I’m now on committee as Treasurer, and can’t wait to get even more involved with the club, help organise some great events and to try to give back where I can!’

Kirill Sakahrov

LSESU Barbell & Powerlifing Competitior

During my time with LSESU Barbell Club I’ve been involved in multiple competitions and have became British and European champion! Without doubt the supportive and fun environment in the club has helped me reach these achievements and make many new friendships while I’m at it!

Joe Qureshi

LSESU Hockey

On the pitch, I managed to start every game this season for the 1st XI and scored important goals in the Cup Quarter-finals and Semi-finals. Off the pitch, I was just voted in as the Mens Social Secretary after taking on a secondary role in my first year, helping the previous Social Secretary and Tour Secretary organise events and Hockey nights.

Anisa Khan

LSESU Kabaddi

"Before LSE I had never played Kabaddi. I went from being a newbie, to being captain of the first team, to being a player in the national England team, all whilst at LSE! I have had amazing opportunities and have made so many new friends whilst playing the sport."

Freya Thompson

LSESU Lacrosse

"At LSE Lacrosse I've had an amazing year of both competitive playing in the London League and having the opportunity to meet so many amazing people through some great socials.

On the playing side, this year we were lucky enough to compete in the Mixed Competitive division, meaning we were up against Mixed Lacrosse teams from universities like UCL and Kings that have so many more players than us! This was a great achievement for us, especially considering we ended the year in 3rd place out of 6 teams, only coming behind Imperial and Royal Holloway.

Lastly, the social side of the club has allowed me to meet so many people from across the years that I otherwise wouldn't have met. We've done Carol, pub golf, karaoke night and plenty of club dinners. The club has made my first year at LSE so welcoming and I can't wait to get back in September and start the year again, albeit in a modified way."

Dev Stigant

LSESU Fencing & GB Fencer

“I have really enjoyed my time fencing at LSE, joining the team and competing every week with friends in BUCS matches. With the support of the Fencing Club and the LSE Athletics Union, I have progressed significantly as a fencer and achieved a lot of my goals. I had a very strong season in my second year at LSE, placing 7th at BUCS Nationals, placing 10th at the British Under 20 Nationals and being selected for the Under 20 GB team.”

Chl Blyth

LSESU Rowing & Competitive Skiing

"I joined LSE Rowing as a fresher with no experience whatsoever in the sport. I fell in love with it and eventually rowed for the University of London in my second year. LSE is where it all started for me though so I am excited to be returning to the club as the Women’s Vice Captain for my third year. I grew up surrounded by extreme sports and I really want to inspire and encourage girls to train hard, lift heavy and partake in sports more traditionally undertaken by guys!"

Alissa Virtanen

LSESU Dance

"One of the best parts of LSE Dance Club is the amazing and family-like community! To keep this up even after our members were scattered around the globe due to Covid-19 last Spring, I set up a group on Facebook called ’Dance Diaries’. This was a platform where anyone could post dance videos of themselves and their families when stuck at home. It helped us stay connected through our shared love for dance. Later on, I used it to host virtual end-of-year awards and a screening of clips of what would have been our annual dance showcase.

Now we’re focusing on developing our online platforms and help raise awareness of important issues. Hence, we set up a weekend of online dance classes, which act as a virtual fundraiser!"

Quinn Kiernat

LSESU Football

My introduction to the FC was poorly planning a trip to Oktoberfest during trials and desperately messaging the instagram to see if I could get on a team(best decision I made at LSE). The FC was an incredible experience for me as a general course student, and while I became super tight with the members of my specific team, the 7 team setup creates an amazing community of footballers of all levels. In my time in the FC, I had the pleasure of meeting guys from all over the world and intra-LSE derbys were some of the most fun games I've played in. Starting the varsity game was an amazing experience, with the fans constantly singing as we destroyed Imperial and took our first varsity win. I am extremely grateful I joined the FC and I could not imagine my LSE experience without it. I had an amazing time guest playing for as many teams as I could,  mastering taps, singing teammates songs on nights out, and that's just scratching the surface of what the FC has to offer. I made friends for life and I wish I could come back and play another year in the FC.

Gabriel Lever-Grecu

LSESU Tennis

“Gabriel has been part of the LSESU Tennis club alongside his studies here at LSE. He is one of our top players and makes sure that everyone feels included and enjoys practice. A valued and active member of this sports club, Gabriel has made a positive contribution to the sporting community here at LSE.”
