Beyond the Classroom SU Talks: Does Voluntourism do more harm than good?

Thursday 18 February 2016
7pm - 9pm
6th Floor Studio, Saw Swee Hock Student Centre

Led by Education Officer Jon-Rhys Foster, SU Talks is a series of lectures that aim to explore 'alternative' career paths. Experts from different industries will explore topical issues within different sectors through panel discussion and debate.

This talk will look at the major challenges of working in international development as a volunteer, the political issues confronting the sector and explore the impact of overseas volunteering on communities and the volunteer themselves.

Some of the questions our panellists will face include: How can someone make a difference to a community thousands of miles away? What are the dangers with overseas volunteering? How do host communities feel about overseas volunteers coming to work with them?

Guest speakers include:

  • Amy Jones: Youth Programme Officer at VSO
  • Gerald Sowah: Set up National Volunteer Day and National Volunteering Database in Ghana
  • Kate Stefanko: Placement Director at People and Places
  • Dave Coles (Chair): Volunteer Coordinator at LSE
