FILM SCREENINGS

As per the requirements of the Licensing Act 2023, the screening of films in public (for example, as part of an event) must only be done where relevant licenses have been obtained, in order to avoid an infringement of copyright under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

  • Unfortunately, LSE itself doesn't have a filmbank license, so with the exception of films being shown to students for information, instruction, or educational purposes (which are exempted from these requirements), films being shown for any other purpose (i.e. recreational) can't be hosted within LSE rooms. For more information on this, please see here.
  • As such, if you're looking to host a film screening as a Student Group, it will need to take place within the Saw Swee Hock (SAW), as LSESU does have a filmbank license that covers the above, so please bear this in mind when planning and submitting your Event Forms for related activities!

EVENTS IN SAW

Student Groups may wish to use a space within the Saw Swee Hock (SAW) for some of their other activities and events. For an overview of the different spaces available, please see here.

  • If you are looking to host an event within SAW, the process for confirming a space here is slightly different to rooms in LSE buildings, as these spaces are managed by the SU's central Events Team, not LSE Room Bookings.
  • Due to the nature of the spaces available being more flexible in terms of what they offer as well (i.e. open floor plans, staging, etc), they will often be in higher demand than your regular classroom.
  • As such, it won't always be possible to secure one of these spaces for your preferred date/time, so please bear that in mind when planning, and have alternative dates/times in mind just in case!
  • You'll also need to follow the usual process for submitting an Event Form within the required notice periods, which once picked up by a member of the team, will be passed on to the SU's central Events Team as well, in order to confirm whether the dates/times you've indicated would work.
  • From there, depending on your event's requirements, and the level of complexity involved in your proposed event, we will then get back to you with confirmation of the event and space being fully approved, or to arrange an initial meeting to discuss your plans in more detail, so that tailored support can be provided throughout the process of its organisation.
  • Please also bear in mind that it won't always be possible to accommodate your requests, for a number of potential reasons, including the unavailibility of spaces, and insufficient notice provided. Furthemore, if your event is of a larger scale, there may be some associated costs involved, but these would be communicated to you as part any related discussion meetings with the team.

EVENTS IN OTHER LSESU SPACES

In addition to events in Saw Swee Hock (SAW) itself, our Clubs and Societies also make use of the LSESU spaces within the Marshall Building (MAR), including the Weston Studio and Sports Hall.

  • In a similar vein to the guidance on 'Events in SAW' above, these spaces are also in high demand due to the nature of what they provide, and so the process for securing them is similarly different to the booking of LSE rooms.
  • We also need to ensure fair allocation across different Clubs and Societies, and so it won't always be possible for us to accommodate requests for the entirety of the dates/times you'd like, particularly if you're being booked in for regular slots, as the daily/weekly/termly schedules will need to be confirmed based on providing access to a number of different Student Groups.
  • An Event Form will again be required as usual for any activities you want to organise within these spaces, so just indicate your preferred slot(s) as part of that, and we can then work with you to confirm arrangements as best as possible with everything mentioned above in mind.
