European Law Students' Association (ELSA)

European Law Students' Association (ELSA): Introduction

LSE's very own local group of the world's largest law student network, European Law Students' Association (ELSA), provides law students with unique and enriching international opportunities. Having established its presence in nearly 400 law schools across Europe and beyond, ELSA is a truly international network promoting cultural exchange and greater awareness while developing law students' skills in a variety of areas.

The three key areas of ELSA are:

  1. Seminars and Conferences (S&C) – From study visits to different institutions in London and abroad, to specialist seminar series, the S&C adopts an interactive and interesting way of introducing a given theme to students. ELSA members have the possibility to attend the excellent (and affordable) Summer Law Schools organised all around Europe and beyond. While you learn about a specific topic – whether it was energy law, international business law, maritime law, dispute resolution,  banking law or etc. – over the course of 7-10 days, you have the possibility to network with fellow law students from all around Europe and to experience a new culture in Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, Azerbaijan...
  2. Academic Activities (AA) – ELSA organises two prestigious international moot court competitions: (1) the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition (EHRMCC), modelled against the law and procedures of the European Court of Human Rights; and (2) the EMC2 Moot Court Competition modelled against the law and dispute settlement procedures of the World Trade Organisation. In addition to all different academic projects and initiatives, ELSA organises Legal Research Groups where individual members have the possibility to join a national team and conduct legal research on a given topic for an international institution or organ (inter alia the European Commission) or a major international law firm.
  3. Student Trainee Exchange Programme (STEP) – Looking for legal work experience? STEP offers ELSA members from all study levels the opportunity to go working abroad at the European Council, a law firm, a legal advice centre... The options are endless! From Luxembourg to Azerbaijan, these paid positions vary in length from 2 weeks to several months.
