Join us at our Give-it-a-go Session to hear more about what Microfinance is and what the Microfinance Society does in relation to this discipline! We will introduce the basic concept of microfinance, roles, and subcommittees in the Microfinance Society and explain what you stand to gain as a member. We will then conclude with an introductory activity in which you will explore themes within this field.

The LSESU Microfinance Society was founded in 2015 to further the aim of Microfinance: empowering the financially marginalized. We achieve this in two ways.

Firstly, we serve as a platform for students to engage in critical discourse about Microfinance. We provide a five-session crash course in Michaelmas Term to give students a comprehensive introduction to the concept of Microfinance. We explore novel ideas and contentious issues in the world of microfinance by hosting talks and panel discussions with renowned professionals within the sector. We also provide information sessions for graduate placements and internship opportunities in Microfinance.

Secondly, we enable students to take action through the LSESU Microfinance Initiative, our student-run consultancy. Through the LSESU Microfinance Initiative, which is run in Lent Term, students work in teams to provide microfinance institutions with pro-bono consultancy services. By conducting in-depth research, students develop insights and solutions to support the meaningful endeavors of microfinance institutions across the globe. We also have our very own fund project, where we provide support to micro-entrepreneurs through consulting and loan provision. Through these projects, students stand to learn valuable consulting, fundraising, and project management skills, as well as gain an incisive look into the work of Microfinance Institutions. We have collaborated with institutions from all over the world, including Rangde, DEKI, and LendWithCare.
